February: Taking your Health to Heart

February: Taking your Health to Heart 1

Is your heart strong? February is Healthy Heart Month! The month may be short and the center of attention on sweets, but our focus should be on what keeps us going: our heart! The following are some wonderful heart-conscious events:

  • • Most school age children will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart in theirs schools. Check out these links to see how your school or PTO/PTA can get involved.
  • • Friday, February 4, 2011 is National Wear Red Day in support of heart health for women. This is part of the Go Red for Women initiative.
  • We can’t help others if we don’t take care of ourselves first, and we all know that children watch every move we make. So here are a few simple changes to our routines that can make a big impact on our everyday health:

  • • Dance, walk, exercise, play outside with family and petsEat heart-healthy foods
  • • Drink more water
  • • Get a good nights’ sleep
  • • Switch from using a desk chair to sitting on physio-balls.
  • • Try standing at raised computer tables
  • • And most importantly: take time to be active at least one hour a day for yourself!
  • At abcteach, we strive to better serve you, and we can do that more efficiently when we take care of ourselves, too. We have prepared support materials for you to use with your children, including movement activities to supplement the traditional February Valentines routine.

    Happy Heart-Healthy February!
