Lincoln’s Birthday

Note: One of the treats of teaching is the spontaneous comments from young students. I always loved them, and some of them have stuck with me for years. Here’s one for today:

Our school annually celebrated Lincoln’s Birthday. A fellow teacher’s daughter was attending first grade at our school. In the course of the celebration, she learned that President Lincoln had been born on February 12th many years ago. February 12th happened to be her birthday, too. She ran into her mother’s classroom bursting with excitement, and said, “Mom, Mom, another important person was born on February 12th!” Thirty years later, I still remember how impressive it was that a young girl already understood her own importance as a person.

Happy birthday, Mary!
