Classroom Spotlight

“I am currently in my 4th year teaching high school Spanish. I have taught in Michigan and now in California for both levels 1 and 2.  I have always thought that Spanish is a unique high school class because all grades (9-12) are in one room learning and working together. While, at times, this creates a challenging dynamic with the wide range of ages in one classroom, learning Spanish is always the great equalizer.

Learning a second language is challenging, but one of my biggest rewards as a teacher is seeing my students use the Spanish they are learning. It is fun to see them excited about what they know and how much they have learned.  Each year, we bring a traditional Cuban Salsa dance instructor in to teach the kids how to dance.  It is one of my favorite days of the year. The students light up when they can use their Spanish to ask questions and learn about traditional music and dance first hand. It makes what we do everyday in class worthwhile and personal.”
